FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is talkplace?

talkplace is a group of independent psychotherapists working in private practice in London, who also have clients worldwide through Skype and phone links. It was founded in 2019.

What kind of therapy is available?

talkplace therapists offer both short term and longer term counselling and therapy, with the option of phone or skype sessions as well as face-to-face meetiings. Our 'brand' of therapy includes psychodynamic and integrative techniques, and looks at repeated patterns of thought and behaviour from the past, as well as making use of the interactions between therapist and patient as a means of learning more about our ways of being and relating.

What kind of problems brings people to therapy at talkplace?

 A very wide range, relating to all aspects of work or home life. The most common ones are depression-based conditions and anxiety, as well as bereavement and work stress.

Who are the therapists?

All our therapists are trained to a Postgraduate Diploma or Master’s Degree level, and are registered with the relevant professional bodies, including the BACP and the BPC.  

How many sessions?

This will depend on you. You can have anything from Single Session Therapy (SST), or a set of pre-booked sessions which you can arrange with your therapist. All of these can be renewed at your request with the same therapist. 

What if I miss a session?

You will need to pay for any missed sessions.

How can I pay?

You can arrange payment directly with your therapist. Some will accept card payments, and some will offer discounts when you pay for all the sessions in advance.

What if I’m not sure about having therapy?

The best way to find out is to book a single ‘taster’ session, or else a short block of sessions - say for six weeks.

What if I don’t like my therapist, can I change?

Once you have completed your block of sessions, you can of course choose not to renew, or to start with another therapist from talkplace or elsewhere. However, initially disliking a therapist can often lead to very productive work, as it will reveal aspects of how you relate to people outside of therapy too, and give you the opportunity to talk frankly and safely about something that appears hard to tolerate.

What happens when I book online for a 15-minute call?

During the call, you will be able to ask anything you like about the talkplace service, and perhaps discuss in broad terms what is drawing you to a talking therapy.

How can I contact my therapist in between sessions?

Your therapist will leave you a contact number or email address, in case you need to cancel a session. For all our clients (including those signed up for telephone or Skype counselling) your therapist is only available during your appointed counselling session.

Are discounts available?

There are discounts available for blocks of sessions booked in advance. Ask your therapist for details.

How do the phone and Skype sessions work?

These will work best if you try to create a sense of the 'therapeutic space' that you would enjoy during a meeting in person. The day and time will be fixed and regular, and you should try to reserve the same place for the session each week: a place where you will not be disturbed or overheard, and with messaging notifications turned off. Your counsellor will do the same. It can be useful to take just a few moments before the session starts – just to quiet your mind. Imagine you are waiting for a few minutes outside a therapy room, creating a little mental distance between the counselling session and what you were doing immediately before.
